Artist Statement
She has always been interested in nature, in our evolution and our history. Maya focuses on the interaction of humans with nature and the changes that result from this process. Intrigued by the possibilities that textiles offered her she started exploring different techniques guided by her sense of colors and the feelings they invoke in her. She is a person who strives to be in tune with her mind, body and her surroundings, and continuously searches for new ways of expressing her thoughts, feelings and concerns.
During the last few years she created a series called 'Urban Sprawl', ’ Hindsight’ and another one titled 'Stretched To The Limit'. The latter focuses on issues such as endangered animal or plant species and social issues. Living in southern Florida exposes the artist to more than just lush, rich tropical life and beautiful waters but also brush fires, floods, droughts, spills and pollution. She experiences south Florida's urban sprawl expanding like an uncontrolled brush fire, and leaving behind large concrete and asphalt areas, and polluted waters.
